This is all that someone could be aware of at a particular moment in time, in all five sensory systems, of external events as well as internal bodily sensations. Because of the inherent limitations of our perceptual systems, at any moment we can only be aware of a very tiny fraction of what is potentially available to us, while the rest remains ignored and unconscious. For instance, as you read this, you are probably unaware of the feeling behind your knees, or the background sounds around you—until you read these words that direct your attention to them. This is the basis of George Miller’s [8] classic paper on the 7 +/- 2 limitation on how many “chunks” of attention are available to us at any moment.
